Sweat Quilt

Sweat Quilt was a project over a period of 1 year in which I gathered sweat (through exercising in the same 6 pairs of t-shirts, vests, socks, and underwear without washing them) and dyed the clothes after two separate month long sessions of exercise. The dye marked how acidity in the sweat broke down the structure of the fibers, allowing the stress the textiles had gone through to become visible.

How do our bodies mark the objects they interact with daily? How do these objects in turn shape us?

After gathering sweat and dye I then deconstructed the garments from their original form and reconstructed them as a quilt, which was presented over a cast of my body holding a plank position.

Quilt (cotton exercise clothes, cotton batting, thread, handmade dyes [yellow and red onion skins, acorns, turmeric, tea, red cabbage, rusted iron nails], synthetic indigo dye) sweat, plaster. 2021-2022.
